Billie Eilish nearly came to tears at the 2020 BRIT Awards.
While accepting the trophy for Best International Female Solo Artist at last nightâs (February 18) awards ceremony, Eilish made a heartbreaking confession about dealing with her detractors. âIâve felt very hated recently. And, when I was on the stage and I saw you guys all smiling at me,â Eilish said through tears of joy, âIt genuinely made me wanna cry. And I wanna cry right now, so thank you.â
The emotional moment came just hours after the âBad Guyâ singer-songwriter made another hard revelation about facing Internet trolls on Instagram. âI stopped reading comments fully. It was ruining my life,â Eilish told BBC Breakfast before the show, where she also delivered the live debut of her song âNo Time to Dieâ from the upcoming James Bond film of the same name.
âThe cooler the things you get to do are, the more people hate you. Itâs crazy,â the 18-year-old added. âThe internet is just a bunch of trolls, you know? And the problem is that a lot of it is really funny. I think thatâs the issue â thatâs why nobody really stops, because itâs funny.â
Success has become a bittersweet thing for the four-time Grammy-winning songbird, whose struggles with depression and anxiety, she bravely revealed, led to suicidal thoughts. âI was so unhappy last year,â she shared in a pre-Grammys interview. âI was so unhappy, and I was so, like, joyless. I donât want to be too dark but I genuinely didnât think I would make it to 17.â
