Beyonce Announces 'Black Is King' Visual Album: See The Trailer

Beyonce is releasing a new visual album called Black Is King. The project was written, directed, and executively produced by Queen Bey herself and is set to premiere on July 31 via Disney+. Watch a teaser trailer on Beyonce's official website.

According to a press release, Black Is King “reimagines the lessons of The Lion King for today’s young kings and queens in search of their own crowns" and is based on music from the Beyonce-curated album The Lion King: The Gift. It's set to feature some of the album’s collaborators, as well as special guest appearances, and is referred to as “a celebratory memoir for the world on the Black experience.”

"The voyages of Black families, throughout time, are honored in a tale about a young king’s transcendent journey through betrayal, love and self-identity. His ancestors help guide him toward his destiny, and with his father’s teachings and guidance from his childhood love, he earns the virtues needed to reclaim his home and throne," the press release continues. "These timeless lessons are revealed and reflected through Black voices of today, now sitting in their own power. 'Black Is King' is an affirmation of a grand purpose, with lush visuals that celebrate Black resilience and culture. The film highlights the beauty of tradition and Black excellence."

Black Is King is one of three projects Beyonce is reportedly working on for Disney. Last week she surprise-released a new song called "Black Parade" to celebrate Juneteenth, and has been outspoken about the Black Lives Matter movement, writing an open letter to Kentucky's Attorney General demanding justice for Breonna Taylor.
