John Legend Performs Emotional Rendition Of 'Never Break' At BET Awards

Even though they look a little different this year, the BET Awards are back for a night of celebrations. The now-virtual awards show, which honors achievements from Black artists in movies, music, TV and sports, put together a star-studded line up for the musical performances. Alicia Keys, Chloe X Halle, DaBaby and John Legend were just some of the super stars who participated in the virtual event on Sunday (June 28).

Early on in the show, Legend performed a moving rendition of his song 'Never Break.' While Legend may not have been able to take the stage IRL at a live version of the BET Awards, his virtual performance was still show stopping. Set in an abandoned warehouse, Legend sang and played his piano alone during the beginning of his performance. By the end, though, Legend was joined by a number of other performers.

Legend released 'Never Break' just last week on his Twitter account. The EGOT winner wrote the song for the upcoming Netflix documentary Giving Voice, which follows six high school theatre students as they participate in the annual August Wilson Monologue Competition ."We wrote [Never Break] in early 2019 & it feels even more meaningful today," Legend wrote of the song's powerful message on Twitter. "It's about a commitment to staying hopeful, resilient and full of love despite the challenges the world may throw at us. Don't give up on fighting for what's right. Don't give up on love."

Since dropping 'Never Break,' fans have taken to Twitter to express how much they've connected to the song's lyrics. One fan called 'Never Break' the '2020 anthem' given to them for 'surviving the year.'
