A fifty year old Augusta man has been arrested and charged with trying to burn down his home while his wife and six children were still inside.
Fifty year old, George Arno Lyons was charged with terrorists threats and 6 counts of cruelty to children in the third degree. Richmond County Sheriff’s Officers say the incident occurred on May 31 at approximately 2 p.m.
Lyons wife told deputies that he was attempting to burn down the family residence by pouring vegetable oil and gasoline throughout the house and lighting it with a piece of paper. According to his wife, her 6 children were present in the home at this time.
According to the arrest report Lyons and his wife got into an argument over the discipline of one of their children who had not been cleaning up around the house.
As the argument continued, Lyons reportedly went into the kitchen and grabbed three large containers of vegetable and canola oil and poured them all through the house. Lyons took a piece of paper, lit it on the stove, and attempted to place it in the oil, but the oil extinguished the paper. Lyons then went and got a gas can from next to the lawn mower outside, and came back inside and poured the contents on the top of the oil.
George Arno Lyons was booked at the Charles B. Webster Detention Center.
